What Gets Between You and Your Greatness

After decades of coaching powerful executives around the world, Lolly Daskal has observed that leaders rise to their positions relying on a specific set of values and traits. Lolly, Happy New year! I love your articles and am an ardent follower of your blog. Thanks so much.

I have a very specific question on the leadership style you write – “leading with heart” – which I practice too! Conventional corporate America, leaders who command and control are perceived to be stronger, better, and necessary to lead the teams and leaders who lead with heart are perceived to be weak, not effective, lacking in presence. How should one navigate such perceptions given that conventional leadership styles are still so prevalent?

I’d like to add a specific example to the above question. I have seen a specific style of leadership that drains the team’s energy and demoralizes them. While this person has great presence with customers, based on the team’s feedback, they abhor working with this person. Yet their leadership style is preferred by customers and even internal leadership team who is aware of their shortcomings and negative traits. I’m wondering why so? Could you please shed some light on this?

I promise to do my best to keep all these promises. Great resolutions for 2016! What I really like about these promises is that they are so complex and remind us that a leader needs to focus the attention in 2 ways, speak and listen, and act accordingly.
