Everything you need to know about life and leadership you can learn from Noah’s ark:
- Don’t miss the boat.
- Remember that we are all in the same boat.
- Plan ahead.
- It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
- Stay fit: when you are 60 years old, someone may ask you do something really big.
- Don’t listen to critics; just get with the job that needs to be done.
- Build your future on high ground.
- For safety’s sake, travel in pairs
- Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
- When you are stressed, float awhile.
- Remember, amateurs built the ark, but the Titanic was built by professionals.
- No matter the storm, when you have faith there is always a rainbow waiting.
– Author Unknown
Eventually difficult times come to us all – individually and in our organizations. The storm may be brief and relatively mild or a 40-day deluge.
When things begin going wrong, everyone looks to the leader to set an example.
How do you cope with difficult times?
How will you keep up with occasional setbacks?
It’s difficult for us when we have set backs to face the unknown and it’s hard for an organization to grow and thrive in the face of a storm. But if you can follow the advice of this little piece –have faith, stay afloat, stay connected, build for the future, keep steady on your vision, and stay fit – we will most likely to rise to the occasion.
The practice of life is important. The content of leadership is interesting, and the practice of leading is what we need to honor.
Lead From Within: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step of surrender to the storms and setbacks.

The Leadership Gap
What Gets Between You and Your Greatness
After decades of coaching powerful executives around the world, Lolly Daskal has observed that leaders rise to their positions relying on a specific set of values and traits. But in time, every executive reaches a point when their performance suffers and failure persists. Very few understand why or how to prevent it.

Great points, it was straight to the point about the very important traits of Leaders and Leadership. I also like the biblical reference that was used here.

Lolly:
I am always energized when your tweet contains “new post’ – for I know you can be counted on to deliver “the goods” and to do so with grace, enthusiasm, clarity, and depth.
Mae West used to say quite often – “It’s not what I do-it’s the way that I do it.” This applies quite well to the way you couch your thoughts in word combinations which might, if said differently, mean something along the lines of your intention, but would not carry the message so well. For example: “The practice of life is important. The content of leadership is interesting, and the practice of leading is what we need to honor.” That is most felicitous.
I do not always show up at the Tuesday night sessions for one or another reason, but I am always with the great community of thoughtful people who assemble in that virtual hall, and your content inspires each and every day.
With heartfelt gratitude.

Lolly –
p.s.
I really like this:
“Stay fit: when you are 60 years old, someone may ask you do something really big.”
Yep- applies after you’ve entered your 4th quarter century on the planet too – I’m being asked to do some pretty big things, and LeadFromWithin is a source of my “staying fit” in all departments.

I love this post. Your list is great!
I’d add one item to it.
God will preserve you for staying the course when everyone around you isn’t.
My first time visiting your blog…good stuff!

Posted to Facebook;
I’m 54 and my wife keeps encouraging me to get back to the gym and school. My wife the “YMCA Wellness Coordinator” appears to be wise beyond her years. Seems to be a consistent theme I need to do something about. But this share is not about me it’s about weathering storms, life, leadership, and a very enjoyable BLOG. Thanks Lolly and Jeanne!
Loved John Pauls Comment;
“and keep looking for the dove of peace.”

A Wonderful post Lolly,
Anyone willimg to buld an ark when it wasn’t raining amidst the naysayers and jeering that probably continued for months, AND then, fill it with ALL those wild-turned-peaceful animals, not only has a Calling, but truly trusts that the whole journey will work out, based on the same God/HigherPower who nudged him to start chopping down all those trees in the first place:)
It’s all about Listening Within and acting with Belief and Leading with Courage.
I’m guessing Noah had access to one of your earlier ancient versions of #leadfromwithin that helped him hear the call and move ahead with this boat project:) After all Lolly, we all know you are an “old soul’ 🙂 EdC

Thank you, Lolly. I appreciate the insights in this posting, as well as many others you’ve shared in the past. What a great perspective to look at our challenges today in the context of a REALLY BIG challenge from several thousand years ago. Have a great weekend. ☺

All good points. I’d add keep your eye on the ball, there will be obstacles but they are distractions not the point of your focus.

Aw, this was an incredibly nice post. Spending some time and actual effort to
create a superb article… but what can I say… I put things off a
whole lot and never seem to get anything done.
